In recent months, UnderArmour, a USA based company specialising in sport performance clothing, has introduced their new dentally fabricated sports appliances which are designed to provide all sportsman [and those with physically active careers] a noticeable improvement in all aspects of physical activity.

This simple scientifically researched, designed, light weight and unobtrusively comfortable to wear appliance quite simply repositions the contact relationship between the upper and lower jaws which strengthens the head and neck area. In doing so, this also improves both the positioning and strength of the lower skeletal / muscular system into a balance that naturally improves physical performance and reduces fatigue while engaging in all types of sporting and physical activity.

Although this concept is not new [Gladiators in the Roman Arenas improved their performance by gripping a strip of leather between their teeth], the materials to produce these modern day versions have only recently become available.

In essence, the science is based on the following:

 1. In physical exertion, there is a natural tendency to clench the jaws which, in turn, compresses the jaw joints and with an associated tendency to ‘hold your breath.
 1. Compression of the jaw joints sends a signal to the body’s ‘fight or flight’ mechanism by the production of Cortisol – the body’s ‘stress hormone.
 1. Although this trigger is useful in extreme circumstances of, for example, sudden preparation to defend or escape, this stimulation is only beneficial over a short period of time.
 1. The associated continual Cortisol release over a prolonged period of time rapidly starts to drain and exhaust the body’s natural energy resources with associated excess build up of lactic acid and decrease in oxygen intake.
 1. So, although, the body of highly trained athletes can continue to produce a great performance, it is only enhanced by prior training not by nature.

This is where this mouthwear comes into play. Apart from the secondary design for contact sports [where it provides the same function but is designed to fit the upper jaw like all sports guards], the athletic performance ones are custom fabricated to fit the lower jaw.

These appliances have a very thin bite plate which fits over the back teeth and prevent the above mentioned jaw joint compression and, in doing so, breaks the ‘fight or flight’ Cortisol production and opens of the airway to allow optimal oxygen intake. It also reduces physical and mental tension, improved oxygenation which leads to reduction in body fatigue and the associated improvement in performance, faster recovery time.

Sports Peformance Mouthguard

Hi David

Just to say thank you very much for sorting me out with the ‘mouthguard’! WOW! Today was the first day I used it and I was jumping my horse at home in the school. Normally I am getting on and off to put the fences back up as she knocks them down all the time – today I was getting on and off only to put them up. We reached the top of the wings and have never been so balanced and jumped so well ever. Being of holistic resonance I know this was no coincidence!!
I have always known i have gritted my teeth when jumping because of photos and I always get very hot and out of breath when finished a round.
Today, with the mouthguard, it made me very aware of gritting my teeth but it was kind of nice to know that i could.
When I had finished jumping I noted i was still wearing a down jacket and a huge scarf and was not hot!!
So very postitive results!
thank you very much
kind regards

 1. A motivating discussion is worth comment. There’s no doubt that that you should write more on this issue, it might not be a taboo matter but generally people don’t talk about these topics. To the next! All the best!!
